Reddit is currently the 8th-most visited website globally. Ironically, its iconic UI is often difficult to navigate for new Redditors. As a result, my teammate and I created a mock reddit UI using HTML/CSS. Our mockup includes a new landing page design and a new search section.

Current Layout

I browse Reddit frequently, but this cluttered interface prevented me from using it habitually for years.

Redesigns

We moved the search and login information to the top right corner to optimize space. We then moved the top subreddit bar to the right, but fixed it so users can continuously access them without scrolling up. For the second navigation bar, we reduced the top tabs to five categories to reduce cognitive overload.

Takeaways

• Empathy: When we designed this UI, we designed it based off our own opinions. However, to create a much more seamless and intuitive UI in the future, it will be important to interview both frequent users AND first-time users.
• Simplicity: In a sense, Reddit's UI is actually quite simple. However, its main goal is to provide information, and any errant design decision can detract from this goal. It is important to draw the line between simplicity and redundancy.
